Benefit Reforms:

You may have heard or seen on the news lately, all the talk of benefit reforms and wondered what was going on. There have been several recent changes impacting the benefit-income and resources many disabled-people (including those with dementia) rely upon.

Some of these changes are ongoing and currently seeking input from recipients.

An Opportunity to have your say on PIP/Benefit changes:

The government has launched the Timms Review, currently looking at Personal Independence Payments (PIP). The review, led by Stephen Timms M.P. (Minister for Social Security and Disability) is now seeking input/feedback from disabled claimants and their families/carers, on their experiences, including how their disability affects them, the PIP assessment process, evidence submission, awards and appeals etc.

The claim is: that the review aims to ensure:

‘PIP is fair, fit for the future and supports disabled people in achieving better health, higher living standards and greater independence (via employment)’

Given, the projected objective is also to cut PIP expenditure, many of those affected, as well as the disability groups and charitable organisations that support them, have significant concerns.

The review appears to be part of a broader, worrying agenda to target disability expenditure; as already seen with increased Adult Social Care charges, recent Universal Credit changes and incoming restrictions to the Motability scheme.

Though the review claims to be “co-produced” with disabled people, it’s the DWP/government holding all the decision-making cards.

Nonetheless, they’ve asked for our evidence, so let’s give it to them.

This foray into seeking public opinion (Call for Evidence) opened on 19 March 2026 and will close at 11:59 pm on 28 May 2026; any submissions will need to be in by then.

So, let’s enlighten those who make the decisions, on the role of PIP in our lives: how important it is, the experience of claiming/ assessment and the impact any changes could have. Your input will provide critical insight to those developing the recommendations.
